The 'I GET TO' Morning Routine: 5 Minutes That Change Your Whole Day

By Temple Franklin — Mind Body Spirit Hygiene Tools

You don't need a 2-hour morning routine. You don't need to wake up at 4 AM. You don't need a cold plunge, a journal, a smoothie, and a gratitude meditation before the sun rises. You need 5 minutes. And three words: I GET TO. This is the simplest morning practice that yields the biggest results — because it doesn't add to your morning. It transforms what's already there.

Minute 1: The Reframe (Before Your Feet Hit the Floor)

Before you pick up your phone. Before you check the news. Before the anxiety of the day floods in. Think of 3 things you "have to" do today. Reframe each one: "I have to get the kids ready" → "I GET TO start the day with my kids." "I have to sit in traffic" → "I GET TO have a car and a job worth driving to." "I have to deal with that coworker" → "I GET TO practice patience today." This takes 60 seconds. And it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Minute 2: One Affirmation Out Loud

Pick ONE. Say it out loud. Not in your head — out loud. Your brain processes your own voice differently than internal thoughts. "I GET TO be imperfect and still enough." "I GET TO move through this day at my own pace." "I GET TO choose my response to whatever comes." "I GET TO start fresh. Every morning is a reset." Your voice is the first thing your brain should hear — not the news, not a notification, not your inner critic.

Minute 3: Body Check-In

Stand up. Stretch your arms overhead. Roll your shoulders. Take one deep breath — in through the nose, out through the mouth with a sigh. Then ask yourself: "How does my body feel this morning?" Not to fix it — just to notice. Tired? Tense? Energized? Stiff? This 60-second check-in teaches you to listen to your body BEFORE the day's demands drown it out. Most people don't realize they're exhausted until they crash at 3 PM.

Minutes 4-5: One Intention

Set one intention for the day. Not a to-do list. Not a goal. An INTENTION — how you want to show up. "Today I will be gentle with myself." "Today I will pause before reacting." "Today I will say no to one thing that doesn't serve me." "Today I GET TO be present, not perfect." Write it on a sticky note. Put it on your mirror, your dashboard, your phone lock screen. That's your anchor. When the day pulls you in every direction, that one sentence pulls you back.

5 minutes. No app. No equipment. No perfection required. Just you, choosing how to enter your day instead of letting the day enter you. Remember — change in your perspective changes your experience. This is the "I GET TO" morning practice — and it's just the beginning. The Mindset Shift Workbook ($14) expands this into the full A.C.T. NOW framework — Awareness, Clarity, Tapped In, No Opportunity Wasted — with daily reframing exercises and 10 core affirmations. And Temple's upcoming book goes even deeper. These tools are designed for you to come home to you — your authentic self. Again.
