What Is a Personal Code of Conduct? (And Why Every Adult Needs One)

By Temple Franklin — Mind Body Spirit Hygiene Tools

Companies have codes of conduct. The military has codes of conduct. Even schools have codes of conduct. But you — the person navigating the hardest decisions of your life every single day — you've never written one for yourself. A Personal Code of Conduct isn't corporate jargon. It's YOUR definition of who you are, what you stand for, and how you move through the world. It's the document you consult when life gets confusing, when people test you, and when you need to remember who you decided to be.

Why You Need One

Without a personal code, you make decisions reactively. Someone pushes your boundary? You react. An opportunity comes up? You go with your gut. A crisis hits? You scramble. With a personal code, you make decisions PROACTIVELY. Someone pushes your boundary? You already know your response. An opportunity comes up? You check it against your values. A crisis hits? You have principles to anchor you. A code of conduct is not about being rigid. It's about being intentional. It's the difference between being blown around by life and walking through it with purpose.

The 5 Questions Your Code Should Answer

1. What do I stand for? (Your non-negotiable values) 2. How do I treat people? (Your relationship standards) 3. How do I treat myself? (Your self-care commitments) 4. What do I say yes to? (Your priorities) 5. What do I say no to? (Your boundaries) Your code doesn't have to be long. Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was 272 words. Your personal code of conduct can be even shorter — as long as it's honest.

Framework: The SHIFT Method

One of the 17 frameworks in the PCC Workbook, SHIFT gives you a powerful structure: S — Standards I hold for myself H — How I show up for others I — Integrity in every decision F — Forgiveness I practice (for myself and others) T — Truth I commit to living Under each letter, write 1-3 sentences. That's your SHIFT code. Print it. Post it where you'll see it. Read it when you're tempted to abandon yourself for someone else's approval.

A Personal Code in Action

Here's what a Personal Code of Conduct looks like in real life: Without a code: Your boss asks you to compromise your ethics on a project. You feel uncomfortable but go along with it because you don't want conflict. With a code: Your code says "Integrity in every decision." You know your answer. You say, "I'm not comfortable with this approach. Here's what I suggest instead." It's not easy — but it's clear. Without a code: A friend gossips about someone. You listen and even add to it. With a code: Your code says "I protect people's dignity, even when they're not in the room." You redirect the conversation. It feels awkward for 10 seconds. Then it feels powerful.

The Three Levels

Temple Franklin's PCC Workbook guides you through THREE levels of code: 1. Personal Code — Who am I, alone, when no one is watching? 2. Family Code — How does our family operate? What are our household values? 3. Business/Professional Code — What principles guide my work life? Most people have never articulated any of these. Writing them down — in your own words, not someone else's motivational quotes — is one of the most clarifying exercises you'll ever do. Temple's upcoming book, "I GET TO," goes even deeper into building your identity on your own terms. The PCC Workbook is the action companion.

You GET TO define who you are. Not your parents. Not your boss. Not social media. Not the version of you that someone else needs you to be. YOU. A Personal Code of Conduct is the document that makes that definition real. The PCC Workbook gives you 17 acronym-based frameworks (SHIFT, BALANCE, SOAR, POWER, and 13 more) with guided prompts and commitment statements. It's the most powerful $17 you'll spend this year.
